Biography

Joop Boerstoel (1965) studied at the College of Music in Enschede (wind band conducting and clarinet) and Maastricht (orchestra conducting).

In July 1993 he won the highly rated ‘Silver Baton’ in the International Conducting Contest of the Word Music Contest in Kerkrade (the Netherlands), conducting he Royal Military Band.

Since 1995 Joop Boerstoel is also international at work as teacher, guest conductor, adjudicator and lecturer in for example:

  • Italy (Como area)
  • England (Royal Military School of Music Kneller Hall and Royal Music Academy)
  • Australia (Monash University Wind Symphony, Melbourne)
  • Estonia
  • China (Beijing)
  • Hungary (Debrecen and Budapest)
  • Czech Republic (Prague)

 

As a conductor he worked together with a lot of international well known soloist. Among others:

  • Steven Mead (euphonium)
  • Jörgen van Rijen (trombone, principal trombone player Koninklijk Concertgebouw Orkest Amsterdam)
  • Eddy Vanoosthuyse (clarinet, Flemish Radio Orchestra)
  • And many others

Currently he conducts three wind bands. He is examiner for musical exams and member of the panel of adjudicators of soloist contests. Furthermore, he assists in developing a series of tutorials on wind instruments, to be published by ‘De Haske’. Since 1998 he is attached to the Musidesk in Deventer and gives contributions to Dutch Repertoire Information Center (RIC). In 2005 he was supervisor of a new book from Hans Offringa : ‘the composed grandchild’. A musical story with piano-improvisations by Jan Vayne. He also supervised two books of his former teacher Jan Stulen ‘De Tao van het dirigeren’  and ‘Jan Stulen ten voeten uit…’. From 2015 to 2022 Joop Boerstoel was board member of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) and finally since 2016 Joop Boerstoel is artistic director and conductor of La Sinfonia Contea (part of Musica Contea); a semi-professional orchestra based in the east of the Netherlands.
